FLEXIBLE SPECTRUM NETWORKS
Flexible spectrum networks (FSNs), also called flexible grid, gridless or elastic networks, are being touted by some as the technology for the next generation of transmission line rates and the optical network. FSNs are designed to allow the center frequency and/or bandwidth of optical channels to be dynamically adjusted. The purpose of the elastic networks is to open up more flexibility in the transceivers and switches for spectral networks operating at 100 Gb/s and beyond data rates.
LOW-LATENCY STRATEGY FOR OPTICAL TRANSPORT NETWORKS
Latency in optical networks has been getting a lot of attention recently. This is especially seen in financial and trading firms which depend on the speed of transactions. The delay of a fraction of a second in trading can translate into millions of dollars in losses or lost opportunity. An understanding of the latency added by various network elements and technologies, and the potential tradeoffs and limitations to achieve a low latency network, is essential in developing a sensible low latency network strategy.
MAKING THE MOVE TO 100G
It’s not big news that new applications, services and exponential uptake in mobile devices are driving explosive bandwidth growth. Clearly, existing networks need to scale to meet these demands. However, it’s not just about building bigger networks: it’s about scaling these networks in a way that delivers the required capacity in the most efficient manner, where services can be rapidly deployed and are simple to manage.
ROADMS IN NEXT GENERATION NETWORKS
A description of ROADMs is given from a system’s perspective. ROADM types and architectures are described, and how they are likely to evolve. A discussion is given for how bit rates beyond 100 Gb/s are likely to be realized and the ROADM requirements to support these bit rates. THE BUSINESS CASE FOR 100G
Service providers are having to respond quickly to explosive bandwidth growth driven by an exponential increase in the use of mobile devices for streaming video applications and the growing demand for cloud-based services. Today’s standard network currency is 10G, but demand is outstripping the capacity available over existing 10G infrastructure and operators are seeking ways to rapidly meet the expectations of the market while keeping their costs low.
